Keep Those Resolutions, And Party At Our Chicago New Year’s Events!

As the end of the year gets closer and closer, most people will start to tell you how they feel the need to “get their act together.” You’ll hear some sort of variation on “Next year I need to -insert goal here-”  from almost everyone you know and love, and probably from some people you can’t stand too. These conversations eventually lead to the proclamation of a resolution for the new year, or “New Year’s resolution” as it is often referred to.

Now, what separates a New Year’s resolution from just your regular run of the mill self-improvement planning? It’s the sociality of it all. The beginning of a new year is something everyone is experiencing. The idea of self-improvement though goal-orientation becomes a sort of culture onto itself. It’s the reason why you’ll see gym memberships rise in December and January.

Here’s the thing about New Year’s resolutions, and this may seem a bit obvious, since it is. But It’s way more “fun” to make them than it is to follow them, point blank. But why are they so hard to follow? Is it safe to just say “because people are inherently lazy” and end it at that? We’d like to think it’s a little more complicated than that. In most cases, it has less to do with laziness, than it has to do with poor self-management. Some people either reach to high, or not high enough. They can have a detailed plan of what they want to accomplish, but no real planning on the day-to-day how’s that will make their goal achievable. The common characteristic between these types of people? They all start planning in December.

Now, that’s not always a bad thing, depending on who you are. But for the most part, this type of idealism will cause high hopes, but not necessarily lead to satisfactory results. The real “key” to actually achieving your New Year’s resolution is to get a head start on your goal a few months in advance. You’re more likely to gain traction on your goal by working continuously on it before the new year. Think of it like this, instead of trying to start the year with good habits, think of your New Year’s resolution as a continuation of habits you’ve been working towards during the year.
